Nigerian baseball official Oluwafemi “Coach” Aina has made history as the first umpire from Africa to participate in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) prestigious Umpire Camp in Dallas, Texas.

In an exclusive statement to JIROLTV, Aina described the selection as profoundly significant:”I am profoundly thankful for this chance to reach a major officiating milestone. Being the first Nigerian and African umpire at MLB’s premier training level is a tremendous honour,”he stated.

The intensive Dallas camp featured instruction from globally renowned umpires with extensive experience across World Series, MLB regular seasons, minor leagues, and championship series. “The training staff included some of the most respected figures in baseball officiating,” Aina noted, adding “This experience has been genuinely remarkable.”
Aina also highlighted reuniting with MLB legend Ted Barrett, whom he first met in Cincinnati in 2023, as a standout moment.

He concluded: “I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this possible for their steadfast support and dedication. Play!”
