Leading members of the Ekiti fisheries community, including Prof. Olawunmi Fapohunda and Dr. Ebenezer Adebayo, championed the cause at the event. They emphasized the importance of giving back during the global celebration, which aims to raise awareness about preserving fish stocks and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

Dr. Adebayo noted that while World Fisheries Day is observed globally, Ekiti’s initiative reflects a broader movement of community engagement across Nigeria.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, received the donation on behalf of the special schools. She commended the association’s role in ensuring protein sustainability and expressed deep gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for his recent approval of 74 support staff, including 40 specialist teachers in vocational subjects like Physical and Health Education, ICT, Fine Arts, and Agriculture Science.

“These efforts align perfectly with the governor’s vision of creating an inclusive society where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive,” Princess Agboola said.

The event also showcased inspiring stories of students benefiting from therapeutic interventions and highlighted the positive impact of dedicated therapists. Principals from the state’s three special schools attended, fostering a sense of collaboration and unity.

As the event concluded, attendees lauded the Fisheries Association and the state government for addressing the nutritional needs of children in special schools and championing inclusion for PWDs. The donation not only provided immediate benefits but also reignited conversations about sustainable community-driven initiatives to uplift vulnerable populations.

The collaboration also demonstrates Governor Oyebanji’s enduring passion for strengthening food security while advancing equity and care for persons with disabilities in Ekiti State.
