Ekiti State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Karounwi Oladapo, has issued a strong warning against erecting buildings on high-tension lines and road setbacks. Speaking at a forum in Ado-Ekiti, he emphasized the severe dangers of such practices, which he said could lead to tragic accidents affecting lives and property.
Highlighting government efforts to ensure compliance with building standards, Oladapo noted that the Department of Building Control, established by Governor Biodun Oyebanji, was created to uphold safety standards in all new and existing constructions. “The Governor approved this department to prevent compromises in safety,” Oladapo remarked, urging developers to adhere strictly to regulations.
Educating attendees on safe building distances, he explained that street roads require a 4.5-meter setback, while distribution and express roads necessitate 6 meters and 100 meters, respectively. Oladapo also specified 30 meters from live wires, 15 meters from power lines, and setbacks of 30 meters for streams, 60 meters for rivers, and 100 meters from dams and large water bodies.
Warning that violations would result in government penalties, Oladapo emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and creating a safe environment. He called on the public to support these safety measures to strengthen a more habitable and secure Ekiti State.
