The group stage of the Prof Akin Oyebode Football Competition came to a thrilling end on Sunday, witnessing some stunning upsets and impressive performances to set the stage for the quarterfinals.
The competition, which featured local governments in Ekiti State saw Defending champions Ado Local Government shockingly eliminated in Group A after their 3-1 late collapse to eventual table toppers Emure Local Government. Ikole Local Government who nicked second place from them rallied to a convincing 5-1 victory over Ise Orun Local Government.
In Group B, Ekiti West and Efon Local Governments progressed accruing 7 points each, leaving Ido Osi Local Government and Ekiti South West Local Government behind.
Ikere Local Government won the most competitive Group C on only superior goal difference to Oye who also qualified for quarter finals after surviving a late scare to see out a 1-0 win over Ekiti East.
Irepodun Ifelodun Local Government dominated Group D finishing with 7 points and + 4 goal difference. Ijero Local Government completes the line up with 3 points, from three draws to qualify.
Speaking after the group stage round, the organizing committee lead, Pelumi Abiara said “The competition has been exciting, and we’re pleased to see that the young kids from various parts of Ekiti are able to showcase their talents. The results and performance of the last three weeks have indicated clearly the resolve of the sponsor, Hon Akintunde Oyebode to democratize opportunities.” he said. “We urge fans to stay tuned and get ready for the next stage of the competition. The quarterfinal pairings are expected to released soon with games coming up on Sunday September 22nd.
