Gov.Oyebanji Declares Open South West Deaf(SWAD) Festival in Ekiti

Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has officially declared opened the third edition of the South West Deaf Arts and Culture Festival in Ekiti State, where he received strong endorsements from the South West Association of the Deaf (SWAD) for a second term.

Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Chief Mrs. Monisade Afuye highlighted the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and the welfare of people with disabilities.

She emphasized the governor’s dedication to implementing policies and programs that improve the lives of persons with disabilities in Ekiti State.

She noted that his administration with support from AGILE has also enhanced resources at special schools to support children and disabilities, demonstrating a strong commitment to inclusivity.

She noted that daily job opportunities are being created for persons with disabilities, further highlighting the governor’s efforts to promote equal opportunities for all individuals.


The Ekiti State Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, praised Governor Oyebanji for his transformative efforts, including the renovation of special schools and the provision of modern instructional materials.

She noted the administration’s initiatives such as a month-long sign language course and free health services for people with disabilities.

She explained that the deaf culture encompasses a riche and diverse community with its own language, traditions and social norms and noting that the festival stresses the visually -based forms of expression central to the deaf culture such as storytelling, visual arts and performance.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF EVENT

She urged them to immerse themselves in the program and make best use of the festival.

Commissioner for Arts and Culture, Hon.Ojo Bakare, expressed his support for the association and acknowledged the diverse talents within the deaf community. He pledged to collaborate with SWAD for future events, including Ekifest 2024, and lauded the governor for his inclusive approach and commitment to leaving no one behind.

SWAD Chairman Mr. Sulaimon Akinyemi commended Governor Oyebanji for his relentless advocacy and support for people with disabilities. He highlighted the association’s endorsement of the governor for a second term, recognizing his significant contributions to the community and calling on other South West governors to emulate Ekiti’s commitment.

The highlight of the event was the endorsement of the governor for second term and presentation of Awards of excellence to Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji along some top government officials at the event.

Recall,that the executives of the association (SWAD) had on Tuesday visited the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti Oba Rufus Adejugbe where they received royal blessings and Arinta Water Falls.

The festival, themed “The Deaf of South West Nigeria and Their Disposition to the Renewed Hope Agenda: Impressions and Takeaways,” features various activities, including beauty pageants, traditional games, and seminars. It aims to bridge communication gaps, celebrate the unique culture and heritage of the deaf community, and promote greater understanding and appreciation of deaf culture.
