Dr. Olofinbiyi Advocates End To Hidden Horror Of Breast Ironing

Ekiti state Professor of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Adolescent Reproductive Health Dr.Babatunde Olofinbiyi has described Breast ironing, a practice akin to female genital mutilation as a menace which remains a hidden atrocity impacting countless young girls.

Describing the practice, Dr. Olofinbiyi said it involves pressing or massaging a girl’s breasts to delay their development, leading to deep humiliation and dehumanization.

 

He emphasized the need for heightened awareness and vigilance to combat this severe violation of human rights and urged collective action to protect young girls.

Recall that the Sierra Leone Journal of Medicine had also condemned breast ironing, noting its severe physical and psychological consequences.

The journal reported that the practice, often carried out by family members to protect girls from early marriage and sexual harassment, subjects them to severe pain, infection, and long-term trauma.

Health professionals and human rights activists highlighted the urgent need for education and legal measures to eradicate this harmful tradition.

Dr. Olofinbiyi Babatunde stressed the necessity of a united effort to end breast ironing and safeguard the well-being of young girls.
