She pointed out that the governor had recently approved a study visit to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, demonstrating a dedication to enhancing waste management and public health.
Furthermore, Chief Aluko revealed that her ministry is engaging with private sector partners to communicate the government’s plans for the sector. These plans encompass wealth creation through waste management (waste-to-wealth), the return of large bins to about 20 locations in the state capital, and the beautification of medians with flowers to discourage residents from using them as dumping sites.
Addressing the enforcement of environmental laws, Chief Aluko disclosed that recruitment into the environmental health department of the ministry is underway to employ more environmental health officers. This initiative, approved by the Governor, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, aims to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The commissioner highlighted ongoing sensitization efforts, including programs, commercials, and jingles, encouraging households in the state to have toilets. Penalties for non-compliance are also being broadcast on various media platforms, with plans to take action against violators.
Chief Tosin Aluko underscored the governor’s commitment to the people’s welfare, citing the proactive dredging of canals and drainages before the rainy season, which significantly reduced the risk of flooding-related casualties.
While promising improved waste management initiatives, she called on residents to reciprocate government efforts by responsibly managing waste and maintaining cleanliness to prevent epidemics.
Chief Aluko assured members of the Ekiti NUJ Online chapel of the ministry’s willingness to collaborate and urged them to ensure balanced reporting and fact-checking before publishing on their platforms.
Chairman of the online chapel, Mr. Ayodele Abere, commended Chief Mrs. Tosin Aluko and her team for their swift action upon assuming office. He highlighted the purpose of the visit as a partnership opportunity for information sharing and control.
