Federal Government Aims to Streamline Citizen Data, Putting an End to Multiple ID Registrations.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has unveiled the Federal Government’s plan to invest in the harmonization of the nation’s data, a move set to eliminate the issue of multiple ID registrations in the country. Tunji-Ojo emphasized this during a meeting with the MTN management team, led by Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola, in Abuja on Monday.

He stressed the necessity for Nigeria to establish a technology-driven data hub under the purview of the Ministry of Interior. Tunji-Ojo articulated, “We must have an interior hub; a massive data center where we will comprehensively document all identity information.”

Highlighting the critical importance of data harmonization, he stated, “The integrity of our travel documents must be upheld through the harmonization of our data.” This strategic initiative aims to ensure that citizens no longer need to undergo redundant data capture processes when applying for passports if they already possess a valid National Identity Number (NIN).

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the benefits of data harmonization, envisioning a system where information can seamlessly flow between government agencies. “When we harmonize our data, there will be an exchange amongst agencies such that when our people need data for passports or BVN, with their NIN, their data can be readily accessed,” he explained.

This move signifies a significant step by the Federal Government towards efficient and unified data management, ultimately enhancing the citizen experience while reducing redundancy in identity registrations.
