Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State has reiterated his administration’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of individuals with special abilities, emphasizing that this commitment is of utmost importance and will not be taken lightly.
During a town hall meeting held in Ido Ekiti with the aim of gathering input for the 2024 budget from the senatorial district, Governor Oyebanji commended the Special Adviser for Special Education and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, for her proactive approach since assuming office.
Governor Oyebanji recalled his promise during a visit to the School of the Blind in Ikere Ekiti, which has now been fulfilled through the appointment of Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, a highly qualified individual in the field of education, to oversee the well-being of individuals with special needs. He praised Mrs. Agboola for her achievements since taking up the role.
The governor pledged that his administration would spare no effort to ensure the special education sector is well-equipped with the necessary tools, teaching aids, a conducive and safe environment, and mobility support.
He called upon all members of the community to join hands with the government to enhance the sector, urging them not to view the schools as mere institutions but to reciprocate the government’s gesture by extending love and affection to the children.
Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, upon assuming her role as Special Adviser for Special Education and Social Inclusion, conducted an assessment tour of the state’s three special schools to understand their needs and challenges. Additionally, a comprehensive capacity training program was organized for teachers, instructors, caregivers, and non-teaching staff to equip them with the necessary skills to educate the children and inform them of the government’s plans for the sector.
The government has also procured essential equipment and distributed them to the three special schools, including therapy rooms to enhance the learning experience. Notably, four buses have been provided to the special schools to address mobility challenges, with three more buses expected to be added soon.
Governor Oyebanji affirmed that admissions into special schools in the state are free, calling on parents and guardians to support this initiative by playing their part in ensuring the well-being and education of children with special needs.
