Ekiti NUJ Denounces Coercion Tactics by Alleged Illicit Group SNB
The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned reported instances of coercion targeting its members, compelling them to join an unknown entity identified as the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB). The union decries this action as a flagrant attempt to exploit broadcasters and undermine the integrity of NUJ, both at the state and national levels.
According to reliable sources, the SNB is purportedly engaged in coercive tactics aimed at forcibly enlisting NUJ members, particularly those affiliated with the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) and other broadcast stations, into its ranks. Members have allegedly faced threats of hindered career progression and promotion should they resist joining the SNB.
While acknowledging the right of individuals to form associations, NUJ stresses that any attempt to coerce members into joining such groups is a direct violation of their rights. The union emphasizes that the Public Service Rule of Ekiti State does not mandate membership in multiple labor associations nor tie career advancement to affiliation with any specific group.
NUJ, as both a trade union and professional body representing journalists across various media platforms, stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding the interests and rights of its members. The council calls upon governmental authorities to intervene and address the activities of the SNB, ensuring that the rights and freedoms of journalists are protected in line with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
E-signed by O’Seun Ogunsakin, Secretary of Ekiti NUJ, the statement stressed the union’s unwavering stance against coercion tactics and emphasizes the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and independence amidst external pressures.
