In an unprecedented drive to revamp the special education sector in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has spearheaded a series of initiatives aimed at improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. The governor’s commitment to inclusivity and his appeal for support from individuals, NGOs, and corporate organizations have garnered generous donations, marking a turning point for special government schools in the state.
Notably, the BAO volunteer group made significant contributions, donating packs of indomie and over 300 bed sheets to these schools. Other organizations also chipped in, providing funds to address crucial infrastructural challenges.
Projects such as the construction of solar energy panels to power electrical appliances and the rectification of erosion issues through drainage systems have been instrumental in enhancing the learning environment.
Governor Oyebanji’s passion for ensuring no one is left behind in his all-inclusive government was evident from the outset. Celebrating his 55th birthday, he donated substantial food items and cash to government special schools, amounting to millions. Subsequently, he appointed a Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, to further advance his vision.
This commitment extended to other state officials, including the First Lady Dr.Olayemi Oyebanji, Deputy Governor Chief Mrs. Monisade Afuye,the Secretary to the State Government Dr.Abibat Adubiaro and state Commissioner for finance Mr Akintunde Oyebode who generously supported the schools to mark their birthdays.
Governor Oyebanji’s personal visits to the schools unveiled various structural defects, prompting renovations and construction projects. This included the refurbishment of classrooms, kitchens, and hostels, along with the provision of iron bunk beds, all executed by the local welders association, aligning with the governor’s “no capital flight” campaign.
Upon the assumption of duty by Special Adviser Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, the governor intensified his support for individuals with special needs. The sector witnessed substantial progress, notably with the creation of the first specialized office, expertly managed by a specialist in special education.
The provision of workshops for teachers, instructors, and caregivers, focusing on new teaching techniques and government plans, marked a significant step in elevating the quality of education. Teaching aides, such as therapy rooms, were presented and installed in schools to enhance students’ learning experiences.
Governor Oyebanji further addressed mobility challenges by presenting four refurbished buses to the schools, significantly improving students’ access to education.
The governor’s commitment didn’t stop at local efforts. He leveraged his network to secure support from development partners, including the World Bank, individuals, corporate organizations, and the federal government. The Agile projects also played a pivotal role in turning this vision into a reality.
The three government special schools in the state -Government special school for the deaf ikoro Ekiti, special school for the blind ikere Ekiti and special school for the physically challenged and intellectual disabilities Ido Ekiti has come to stay with resounding transformation.
Though there still lies some challenges like road networks leading to the schools and erosion challenges within some of these schools there is hope that a rapid solution is on the way.
This initiatives has had a significant increase in the number of enrollment into these schools with more to join according to the special adviser hon. Adetoun Agboola and the principals an indicator that soon Ekiti State would become a must visit for philanthropists, organizations, governments across the country and the globe by extension.
In an exclusive interview with Mrs. Adetoun Agboola, she disclosed that, in line with the governor’s mandate for sector growth, the governor gave approval for the employment of 14 therapy staff also parmanent staff who would become caregivers so that teachers and instructors would concentrate on the students, making Ekiti State the first public school in the country to achieve this feat. Curriculum enhancements are ongoing to ensure students are taught in a way tailored to their unique needs, fostering self-reliance after their education.
