In a determined effort to combat the persistent issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse within the Ado metropolis, the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority (EKS-WAMA) has announced a robust approach, requiring environmental law violators to undergo community service.
Speaking on behalf of Engr. Ayoola Osalusi, General Manager of EKS-WAMA, Mr. Emmanuel Ariyo,Director Enforcement and Enlightenment Department, conveyed the new directive during a session at Ekiti State Magistrate Court 2 on Friday. Thirteen offenders were presented before the court for their involvement in early morning instances of illegal waste disposal on medians and unauthorized locations.
Engr. Osalusi emphasized that despite the continuous efforts of the Ekiti State government and the unwavering dedication of the agency to maintain a clean environment, such violations persist. He reiterated EKS-WAMA’s alignment with Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s administration, affirming a commitment to a cleaner and healthier Ekiti.
Henceforth, Engr. Osalusi stressed that no leniency would be granted, as every individual caught in violation of waste disposal regulations would be summoned before the court. In addition to court-mandated penalties, offenders will also be subjected to public exposure through televised community service, intended as a deterrent to others.
Engr. Osalusi further implored residents to actively contribute to the prevention of potential epidemics by adhering to the region’s environmental laws. The implementation of stringent measures, coupled with public cooperation, aims to foster a hygienic and sustainable living environment for all citizens of Ekiti.
