News broke yesterday evening: the Ekiti State Government has approved a massive N7.6 billion contract for a state-of-the-art Indoor Sports Hall! Yes, you read that right – a huge investment in Ekiti sports. This exciting project is slated for completion within 52 weeks, a testament to Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to youth development through sports, as confirmed by Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun.
According to the government, this initiative has been in the works, with a N60 million consultancy fee approved back in 2024.
Just last week, on Valentine’s Day no less, the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium saw tractors excavating the natural grass field – a surprise even to those within the sports ecosystem. Rumors are flying about a major upgrade, possibly even a state-of-the-art AstroTurf. This follows the donation of a brand new coaster bus to Ekiti United and the impressive performance of Ekiti Queens in the NWFL season. Momentum is building.
Remember the Bayo Olanlege-led FA and the 2022 BAO football competition? Many saw it as a political ploy. But Olanlege, who voluntarily left office (against the wishes of many), insisted he saw a leader who would transform Ekiti sports. He has been proven right. Governor Oyebanji is elevating Ekiti sports to new heights.
While past administrations have invested in sports, Governor Oyebanji has taken it to another level. He’s delivered on his campaign promises, establishing the Ekiti State Sports Commission, which has ushered in the multi-purpose indoor sports complex, employment opportunities for sports personalities, timely remuneration, and recognition for athletes. He’s also overseeing the reformation of sports associations, involving top politicians on the boards, which translates to increased attention and, crucially, funding for various sports. This is a stark contrast to the rancor and disagreements that previously plagued Ekiti sports associations.
I recall interacting with then-candidate Oyebanji during the BAO Cup media campaign. Even amidst the football focus, he spoke passionately about other sports: athletics, badminton, table tennis, and even board games. It was clear his vision extended beyond just football.
From unscheduled visits to sports facilities to the appointment of the unifying Dr. Olusola Osetoba to lead sports in the state, Governor Oyebanji’s actions are intentional.
The indoor sports complex will cater to a variety of sports, but beyond the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium pitch, I anticipate further upgrades to the stadium itself. I’m also hopeful that the three other stadia in Ekiti’s senatorial districts will receive much-needed facelifts. Ekiti is brimming with talent – the state that produced Oluyemi Kayode, Damola Osayomi, Olusola Fasuba, and recent scholarship-winning athletes. It’s time to unearth and nurture more of this potential.
Beyond facilities, we must invest in human capital. This means empowering professionals within the sports ecosystem, training and retraining officials and coaches. Our goal isn’t just to improve; it’s to position Ekiti as a model for other states, adhering to global best practices and becoming a destination for national and continental sporting events.
