The President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Ekiti State, Ambassador James Oluwasegun Bankole, has lauded June 12 as a pivotal day in Nigeria’s democratic history. Speaking on behalf of the NYCN, Bankole emphasized that the date symbolizes the nation’s collective struggle and aspiration for democratic governance, a journey that began with the landmark presidential election of 1993.
June 12, 1993, remains etched in Nigeria’s history as the day the country took a decisive step towards democracy with the election of Chief Moshood Abiola. Abiola, a candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), emerged victorious in an election that was later annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida. The annulment triggered widespread protests, which eventually paved the way for the return to civilian rule in 1999. Today, this day is commemorated as a public holiday, honoring the efforts of those who fought for democracy.
Reflecting on the importance of June 12, Bankole stressed that the day is not just a celebration but a reminder of the ongoing need to uphold democratic values. “June 12 serves as a beacon, inspiring us to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy where the rights and freedoms of all citizens are protected,” he said. He highlighted the contributions of key figures like Chief Abiola, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, and the numerous pro-democracy activists who championed the cause.
Bankole also recognized Ekiti State’s significant strides towards democracy, noting the election of Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2010 as a crucial milestone. This event marked a turning point in Ekiti’s political landscape and stresses the broader national progress in consolidating democratic governance.
Comparing democratic governance to military rule, Bankole praised the benefits of democracy, including the protection of individual rights, free and fair elections, and the peaceful transfer of power. He contrasted this with the repression, human rights abuses, and economic stagnation often associated with military regimes, advocating for continued vigilance and commitment to democratic principles.
As the nation commemorates Democracy Day, the NYCN extended congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his renewed vision for Nigeria and to Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State for his efforts to promote prosperity and uphold democratic values. “We support Governor Oyebanji’s initiatives aimed at advancing good governance, youth empowerment, and economic growth in Ekiti State,” Bankole affirmed.
Bankole urged all political leaders to demonstrate genuine dedication to public service, emphasizing the impact of even small acts of assistance on people’s lives. He called for honesty and fulfillment of promises to prevent disillusionment among citizens and expressed a prayer for divine guidance and empowerment for leaders to excel in their duties.
Concluding his remarks, Bankole commended the youth of Ekiti for maintaining peace and stability during critical periods in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He reiterated the NYCN’s commitment to achieve a better Nigeria where every citizen can thrive. “On this momentous day, may Nigeria be blessed, and may we all continue to strive for the democratic ideals that June 12 represents,” he said.
The NYCN’s call to action is clear: uphold the legacy of June 12 by actively participating in and promoting democracy, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past lead to a brighter, more democratic future for Nigeria.
